BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 6/10/19 @ 6:01 p.m.
Police released the name of a woman who died after she was hit by a car late Sunday evening.
Lisa Fitzwater from Cabell County, West Virginia, died after she was hit by a car Sunday evening in the Barboursville area.
Lisa Fitzwater, 43, of Cabell County, passed away at the hospital early Monday morning.
She was hit by a car on U.S. 60 around 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
Her fiance Gilbert Lawrence said Fitzwater was an outgoing person who enjoyed parks and the outdoors, but more than anything loved her family, including her four adult children and two grandchildren. Two of her children had special needs so she had continued to care for them.
"She loved her grandkids," Lawrence said. "I don't know how it's going to affect them now."
The two got engaged at the Rose Garden at Ritter Park several years ago. He surprised her with the help of her family. It was a big moment since she had never been engaged before.
Her influence helped keep Lawrence on the straight and narrow.
"I didn't meet my match. I met my best friend. We did everything together," he said.
Lawrence said his fiance was riding in the car Sunday night, loaded down with items for several upcoming yard sales. The profits would serve as extra spending money for the annual family vacation to Myrtle Beach.
Items in the trunk and tied down on top fell out around 9:15 Sunday night. She insisted on getting out and picking up them up.
Barboursville police said she was hit by a car in the passing lane heading east.
Police say there was low lighting and Fitzwater was wearing dark clothing. The man who was driving the car that hit her was not given a citation.
Lawrence calls it an accident and doesn't blame the other driver.
"I'm going to really, really miss her," he said. "My life ain't going to be the same. She loved me unconditionally, and I did everything I could to love her."
