UPDATE: Name released in fatal accident in Charleston

UPDATE 2/24/16 @ 4 p.m.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Police have released the name of the person who died in a crash on MacCorkle Avenue.

The accident happened about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 2300 block of MacCorkle Avenue near the University of Charleston in Kanawha City.

Charleston Police say the driver of the Honda Accord was headed east when the car suddenly crossed the median into the westbound lane and hit a Buick head-on.

The driver of the car, Tysean Antonio Jenkins, 24, of Charleston was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in his car was taken to CAMC General.

The driver of that Buick was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

No word on their conditions.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The westbound lanes of MacCorkle Avenue has re-opened in the 2300 block after a deadly crash.

One person died in the crash, that happened about 9:15 p.m.

Investigators say a white car crossed the median from the eastbound to the westbound lanes, colliding head-on with a red SUV.

The driver of the car was dead at the scene, and a passenger was trapped inside that car. No names have been released.

Only one person was in the SUV. A woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not clear at this time what caused the car to drift into the opposite lanes. Department of Highways officials say the roadway was dry at the time.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The westbound lanes in the 2300 block of MacCorkle Avenue remain closed late Tuesday night, as well as one of the eastbound lanes, after a deadly crash near the University of Charleston that claimed one person's life.

More details have been released about what led to the crash, which was reported about 9:15 p.m.

Investigators say a white car crossed the median from the eastbound to the westbound lanes, colliding head-on with a red SUV.

The driver of the car was dead at the scene, and a passenger was trapped inside that car.

Only one person was in the SUV. A woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not clear at this time what caused the car to drift into the opposite lanes. Department of Highways officials say the roadway was dry at the time.

Crews say it could be as late as 2 a.m. Wednesday before the lanes are reopened in that area.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One person has died Tuesday night in a car accident in the Kanawha City area of Charleston.

The crash happened about 9:15 p.m. on MacCorkle Avenue near the University of Charleston.

In addition to the fatality, Metro 911 dispatchers confirm that two vehicles are involved in the accident and there is heavy entrapment.

The extent of any other injuries is not known at this time.

The westbound lanes of the 2300 block of MacCorkle Avenue are shut down in this area at this time.
