UPDATE | Charleston shooting suspect arraigned

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 11/7/19 @ 9:55 p.m.
A man charged in connection with a shooting on Charleston's West Side was arraigned Thursday night.

Police identified the shooting suspect as Alexander (Alex) Martel Brown, 37, of Charleston. He was arrested late Thursday afternoon. (Source: CPD)

Alex Brown, 37, of Charleston, faces a malicious wounding charge, as well as a robbery charge from a separate incident, according to Kanawha County court records.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of 2nd Avenue. The victim, Jonathan Murphy, 38, was shot in the arm. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

In the robbery incident, Brown is accused of using a baseball bat to hit a woman in the hand. That incident happened Wednesday in Charleston. According to the criminal complaint, Brown took rings off the victim's hand, a Fitbit from her wrist and a wallet from inside her bra. The woman's purse also was stolen.

Brown was taken to the South Central Regional Jail. His bond is $20,000 cash.

A court date has been set for 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14.

Charleston Police have arrested the suspect wanted in a shooting that happened Thursday morning.

According to officials on scene, Alex Brown called 911 because his foot was hurting.

Brown was arrested late Thursday afternoon in the 200 block of Virginia Street West in Charleston. That's on the city's West Side.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of 2nd Avenue, also located on the West Side of Charleston.

Lt. Autumn Davis says Jonathan Murphy, 38, was shot in the arm. He is in stable condition at the hospital.

The Charleston Police Department says it is investigating if this shooting is related to a report of shots fired on the same block earlier in the morning.

This is the same street where Trequan Gibson was shot and killed on the Fourth of July and at least the 10th shooting on the West Side in recent months.

Charleston Police released the names of the victim and suspect in a shooting on the city's West Side.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of 2nd Avenue.

Lt. Autumn Davis says Jonathan Murphy, 38, was shot in the arm. He is in stable condition at the hospital. He was seen holding a cigarette and drinking a beverage being put into an ambulance.

Police identified the suspect as Alexander (Alex) Martel Brown, 37, of Charleston. He will be charged with malicious wounding.

In addition to the new charge, investigators say there was already an active warrant for Brown's arrest. That is for a first-degree robbery charge related to an incident Wednesday afternoon.

Police say Brown should be considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting happened in the same block where a stray bullet hit a home at about 4 a.m. Thursday. Lt. Davis says they are investigating the incidents as possibly being connected, but there is "nothing concrete" at this time.

Charleston Police are on the scene of a shooting on the city's West Side.

Dispatchers say the victim was shot in the arm. WSAZ's crew at the scene says the victim could be seen walking outside the home and getting onto a gurney. He was then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of 2nd Avenue.

This is the same block where a stray bullet hit a home at about 4 a.m. Thursday.

It is unclear at this point if the two incidents are related.

Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary told WSAZ the school was put on lockdown around 7:30 a.m., but it was lifted 45 minutes later.

A police officer has been stationed at the school as a precaution.
