RACELAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 4/17/19 @ 9:35 p.m.
The Raceland community is coming together to remember a firefighter who passed away over the weekend.

Cody Grubb, 29, died suddenly Saturday night.

Grubb spent 15 years with the Raceland Fire Department, working his way up the ranks from junior firefighter to captain.

“He never let anything stop him,” said Raceland Fire Lt. Tyler Bradley. “He persevered with everything.”

Bradley remembers Grubb as always making his brothers in the fire house laugh.

“Cody was a spirit lifter. You couldn't be in a bad mood when Cody was around.”

Wednesday, the community came together hours before Grubb’s visitation to help with funeral expenses. Friend Carl Wellman hosted a spaghetti dinner at his restaurant, Pappy’s Cookin’, to raise money for his friend’s family.

Like many, Wellman says he will remember Grubb for his dedication to protect his community, and overcoming adversities to do it.

“People would always say that he couldn't do something and he always proved them wrong,” said Wellman.

“I would say that people dont even realize that he has the dwarfism,” added Bradley.

Now a community has a whole in their hearts that they will come together to fill, all while remembering a man who dedicated his life to them.

“He'll never be forgotten,” said Bradley. “All the hard work he put in, all the crazy things he used to do, we'll always remember and be telling stories until we see him again.”

A funeral service will be held Thursday at the Raceland Fire Department starting at noon.
