UPDATE | Neighbors stunned after deadly Mingo County shooting

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 1/22/20 @ 6:20 p.m.
Neighbors say they were shocked Wednesday to find out someone in their community is accused of murdering another man.

A man died Tuesday in a shooting in the Hell Creek area of Delbarton, West Virginia, in Mingo County.

Donald Marcum is charged with second-degree murder in the death of James Gannon, who was shot during an incident Tuesday night along Hell Creek Road near Delbarton.

"It's a shock," said neighbor Harold Maynard. "I can't figure it out. I mean, would he do it? I wouldn't believe that, but you never know ... it's hard to say what the fellow got."

Maynard knew Marcum and so did many others in their community along Highway 65.

Otie Duncan, who lives behind where the shooting happened, also knows Marcum.

"You know, I am right next door," Duncan said. "The phone started ringing. People were asking me questions and telling me what they had heard."

Sheriff James Smith said Gannon stopped at Marcum's home and stole some items. Marcum then followed Gannon's car in an effort to get his property back.

The shooting happened later at another location where neither man lived.

According to the sheriff's department, Marcum drew his gun before Gannon did.

A man named as a suspect in a deadly shooting Tuesday night has been arrested, the Mingo County Sheriff's Department says.

Donald Marcum is charged with second-degree murder.

James Gannon was shot and killed during the incident along Hell Creek Road near Delbarton.

Sheriff James Smith said Gannon stopped at Marcum's home and stole some items. Marcum then followed Gannon's car in an effort to get his property back.

The shooting happened later at another location where neither man lived.

The Mingo County Sheriff released the name of a man who was shot and killed along Hell Creek Road near Delbarton Tuesday, as well as the name of the suspect in the case.

According to Sheriff James Smith, James Gannon was shot and killed.

Sheriff Smith says Donald Marcum will be charged Wednesday with second-degree murder.

According to Sheriff Smith, Gannon stopped at Marcum's home and stole some items. Marcum then followed Gannon's car in an effort to get his property back.

Marcum and Gannon both stopped at a separate location where neither lived.

Sheriff Smith says Marcum had already pulled his gun out when Gannon drew his gun.

Marcum then shot and killed Gannon.

According to Sheriff Smith, Gannon was driving a stolen vehicle.

A man is dead after a shooting Tuesday in the Hell Creek area of Delbarton, Mingo County Sheriff James Smith said.

A person is in custody, according to the sheriff.

Deputies are still on the scene taking statements, and West Virginia State Police troopers are assisting.

Details about what led up to the shooting are unavailable at this time.

The Mingo County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting in the Hell Creek area of Delbarton Tuesday evening.

According to Sheriff James Smith, there were reported injuries but the extent of those injuries are unknown at this time.

The investigation is still underway.
