Guilty verdict returned in Charleston murder case

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 11/6/19 @ 4:31 p.m.
Marcus Young has been found guilty of murdering Terrell Davenport of South Charleston in December of 2017. Davenport was 27 at the time of his death.

Jayrionte Thomas and Marcus Young are charged with murder in the death of Terrell Davenport of South Charleston. Thomas pleaded guilty last week to first-degree murder, and a trial is underway for Young.

The jury recommended no mercy, according to our crew at the scene, meaning Young faces up to life in prison.

Investigators say an argument broke out between Davenport and another suspect, Jayrionte Thomas, in a deli on the city's West Side. They say that's when Thomas shot him, and Davenport was shot again by Young.

Davenport died the next day.

Thomas pleaded guilty last week and testified against Young as part of his plea deal.

The State and defense have both rested in a murder trial that began Monday.

In Judge Salango's court on Tuesday, witnesses took the stand, including the chief medical examiner.

Marcus Young is accused of killing Terrell Davenport of South Charleston in December of 2017. Davenport was 27 at the time of his death.

Jayrionte Thomas, a suspect who pleaded guilty last week, testified against Young as part of his plea deal.

On Wednesday morning, both sides rested.

The case will go to the jury later Wednesday afternoon.

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a man charged in a Charleston murder in 2017.

Marcus Young is accused of killing Terrell Davenport of South Charleston in December of 2017. Davenport was 27 at the time of his death.

Jayrionte Thomas, another suspect in the case, pleaded guilty last week to first-degree murder. Thomas is from Detroit.

As part of a plea deal, Thomas, who was 18 when he shot Davenport, will testify against Young in exchange for life in prison with mercy. That gives him a chance for parole after 15 years.

Investigators say an argument broke out between Davenport and the suspects in a deli on the city's West Side. They say that's when Thomas shot him, and Davenport was shot again by Young.

Davenport died the next day.

A murder suspect is back in West Virginia after being extradited from Detroit.

Jayrionte Thomas is charged with murder in the death of Terrell Davenport on December 14.

A criminal complaint in the arrest reveals new details about the day Davenport was shot along 7th Avenue on the west side of Charleston.

Charleston Police say nearby video surveillance showed that minutes before the shooting, Davenport was sitting in a white vehicle in the parking lot of the West Side Market & Deli. Three men were seen walking by Davenport's vehicle making hand gestures and exchanging words.

Police say the three men enter the store and Davenport enters shortly after.

Once inside, Marcus Young approached the counter and Jayrionte Thomas sat at a table in the store.

Witnesses told police that a verbal argument happened between Davenport and Young inside the store. Shots were fired at Davenport from where Thomas was seated, according to police.

Video surveillance shows Davenport open the front door and fall to the ground after being shot, according to police.

Police say Thomas exited the store with a handgun and continued to fire at Davenport. Once Davenport was on the ground, police say Young was seen shooting him in the head.

Young and Thomas took off heading east on 7th Avenue.

Davenport was pronounced dead the following day at CAMC General.

Marcus Young, 19, who is also accused in the Davenport's shooting, was also captured in Detroit and has not been extradited yet.

Young and Thomas are being charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.



UPDATE 1/18/2018 @ 9:45 a.m.
A murder suspect, who police say fled back to his home in Detroit, is back in West Virginia.

Jayrionte Thomas is charged with murder in the death of Terrell Davenport, 27, of South Charleston on Dec. 14.

Thomas was arrested by U.S. Marshals at the end of December and has since been extradited.

Charleston Police Chief of Detectives Lt. Tony Hazelett tells WSAZ Thomas was transported to the South Central Regional Jail around midnight

He is being arraigned right now in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The shooting happened at the West Side Market and Deli off 7th Avenue in Charleston. CPD says two alleged shooters and Davenport got into an argument shortly before the shooting, but it is not believed that they knew each other.

Marcus Young, 19, who is also accused in the Davenport's shooting, was also captured in Detroit and has not been extradited yet.

Young and Thomas are being charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

UPDATE 12/27/17 @ 9:05 p.m.
A man wanted in the murder of a man in Charleston is in the custody of U.S. Marshals in Michigan.

Charleston Police Chief of Detectives Lt. Tony Hazelett says Jayrionte Thomas was arrested in Detroit.

No other information about his arrest is available now.

Thomas, 18, along with Marcus Young, 19, are accused in the shooting of Terrell Davenport on Dec. 14.

Davenport, 27 of South Charleston, died of his injuries the next day.

Young, who also was captured in Detroit, was picked up on Friday, Dec. 22.

Charleston Police say Davenport was shot multiple times at the West Side Market and Deli off 7th Avenue in Charleston.

Young and Thomas are being charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

CPD said the men got into an argument shortly before the shooting, but it is not believed that the alleged shooters knew the victim.

One of two men charged with the shooting death of a Charleston man have been taken into custody in Detroit.

Charleston Police say Marcus Young was taken into custody Friday by U.S. Marshals.

Young and Jayrionte Thomas are responsible for the death of 27-year-old Terrell Davenport who lived in South Charleston.

Young and Thomas both have warrants out for first-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

CPD says Davenport was shot multiple times at the West Side Market and Deli off 7th Avenue in Charleston.

Officers urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of Thomas to call the Charleston Police Department, Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480.

Charleston Police are still searching for two men who they say are responsible for the shooting death of Terrell Davenport on Charleston's West Side.

Jayrionte Thomas, 18, and Marcus Young, 19, both of Detroit, have warrants out for first-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

"There was just a verbal altercation. Guns were drawn and they shot the victim," Lt. Tony Hazelett with CPD said. Hazelett also said it seems like the men didn't have a connection or relationship before the shooting happened Thursday afternoon at West Side Market and Deli off 7th Avenue.

CPD says Davenport was shot multiple times. The man was 27 years old and lived in South Charleston.

Officers urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of Thomas and Young to call the Charleston Police Department, Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480.

Charleston Police say the victim in a shooting has died and the charges have been upgraded for two suspects on the run.

Jayrionte Thomas, 18, and Marcus Young, 19, both of Detroit, now have warrants out for 1st-degree murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

Police say Terrell Davenport, 27, has died from his injuries after he was shot Thursday afternoon in the 1700 block of 7th Avenue.

CPD says Davenport was shot multiple times.

Police describe Davenport's condition as "grave."

Charleston Police say Terrell Davenport, 27, of South Charleston, is in critical condition, referring to it as grave. They say it appears he is brain dead.

The shooting happened about 12:15 p.m. Thursday in the 1700 block of 7th Avenue.

Police say Davenport was shot multiple times.

Two suspects are believed to be on the run.

Police are looking for two suspects after a shooting inside a deli in Charleston.

It happened about 12:15 p.m. on Thursday along the 1700 block of 7th Avenue.

Officers say one person is in critical condition after being shot multiple times.

Police are on several street corners on the West Side with rifles.

The two suspects are believed to be on the run at this time.
