CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 4/15/19 @ 5:43 p.m.
Police believe a shooting in Charleston early Monday morning may be connected to an ongoing homicide investigation.

David Evans, 30, was shot just after midnight Monday on Charleston's West Side. According to the Charleston Police Department, someone shot Evans in his left leg.

It happened in the 900 block of 6th Street.

Investigators say an acquaintance was with Evans when the shooting happened. The woman told officers that she and Evans left a gas station in the 800 block of Washington Street West and were walking back towards a home on 6th Street. They were in in the area of 7th Ave. and Park Ave. when they heard gunshots. She said they ran.

The woman told police neither of them saw the suspect(s) or a vehicle. Even after Evans was shot in the leg, she said they continued running.

Police found multiple shell casings in the 800 block of 7th Ave. as well as two parked vehicles that were hit by stray bullets.

Sarah Vannatter lives on the street where it happened. She woke up to the sound of more than a dozen gunshots.

"I guess they were going past my house shooting when it woke me up because it sounded like it was right there at my bedroom," she said.

Investigators say it appears this shooting is related to another homicide case CPD is working on. Ronald Seawright Jr. was killed on April 6. The shooting happened on Maryland Ave. in Charleston.

Gerard Spencer, 35, is still on the run. He's wanted in connection with Seawright Jr.'s death and will be charged with first-degree murder. Police say Spencer may have left the state and could possibly be in New York.

Evans was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition.

Police aren't releasing any information as to why they believe the two shootings are connected because both cases are very open and ongoing investigations.

Officers want the public to know this is an isolated incident, and police have no reason to believe the public is in any immediate danger.

If you have any information about the case, call CPD at 304-348-8111.
