VANCEBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 3/12/19 @ 5:30 p.m.
It’s a plot straight out of Hollywood: Two children kidnapped from Lewis County, Kentucky and taken to Mexico. The suspects are their father, their mother and her boyfriend. Investigators said, in decades of law enforcement, they've never seen something like this.
"It's our first involvement in anything like this. We were going into it blind. But it worked out," said Vanceburg Police Lt. Joe Gilbert. "Yeah, I don't care if I have anything, definitely."
A relative who has custody of the kids called police the afternoon of Feb. 4 stating the children got off the bus.
Police now say that was a lie.
Victor Carrington, his estranged wife Kristy Carrington, and her boyfriend Jay Thompson got the kids after a birthday party the day before. According to police, neither parent is allowed to have any contact with the children.
In fact, Victor had been convicted weeks earlier on three counts of sexual abuse of a minor. The victim is a friend of one of the kidnapped children. He was out on bond awaiting his sentence.
Within about two days of police being notified, the suspects' phones were pinging in Laredo, Texas as well as Mexico.
Kristy and Jay were arrested eight days later trying to reenter the United States on Feb. 12 in the car. Victor was arrested four days later as he was trying to walk back in with the children on Feb. 16.
“When we finally got the call that the kids were in custody and safe, that was a big relief,” said Lt. Gilbert.
The kids are safe and now in the custody of Child Protective Services (CPS).
Investigators are not sure why the group went to Texas or Mexico. None of the adults have any apparent connections to the area.
Detectives tell us they aren't sure why the guardian of the kids lied about when she last saw them. We knocked at her door Tuesday afternoon on White Street but no one answered.
Each adult faces two counts of kidnapping.
ORIGINAL STORY 3/9/19
Three people are behind bars after investigators say they kidnapped two children from the Vanceburg area to Mexico.
The Lewis County Herald reports the alleged kidnapping happened in early February.
The initial investigation by Vanceburg Police tracked the suspects to Laredo, Texas where they crossed the border.
Kristy Carrington, 30, and Jay D. Thompson, 29, both from Vanceburg, were caught trying to cross back in to the United States. Victor Carrington, 39, also from Vanceburg, turned himself in a few days later. Authorities say the children were with him. He also faces several sexual abuse charges from a 2017 case.
The FBI escorted the three back to Kentucky, and were booked in to the Lewis County Detention Center on March 4.
No bonds have been set for the three.
The children are safe and back in Kentucky.
