WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Heavy rain Tuesday afternoon brought down a massive tree in a man’s yard in the Lavalette area of Wayne County.
It just missed landing on John Meachem’s home along state Route 152.
Meachem said he was in his house watching “Gunsmoke” when he heard a booming sound. An oak tree was uprooted and came crashing down in his back yard a little after 2 p.m.
It landed just feet away from the back of Meachem’s home. He said he assumes saturated ground from heavy rain is the cause.
Another neighbor said her whole home shook when the tree came down, and a picture fell from her wall. At first she thought she’d heard thunder.
Neighbors are concerned other trees might come down and land on someone's home.
Meachem said he started having problems with his fireplace last year, so he can’t even use the fallen tree for firewood. He’s letting people know if they need any firewood, there’s some available.
