Troopers: Man dies in hospital after shooting girlfriend, then himself on Christmas Eve

A second person, the alleged shooter, has died after an apparent murder-suicide in Carter County, according to Kentucky State Police troopers.

Troopers were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. They got to the home on Winding Way in the Hitchins community and found two people, a man and a woman, each with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Rebecca Lancaster, 49, of Grayson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Billy Suttles, 54, also of Grayson, later died at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Investigators believe it was a domestic violence incident. They say Lancaster was Suttles' live-in girlfriend.

After a preliminary investigation, troopers believe Suttles shot Lancaster in the head with a .25 caliber handgun, then turned the gun on himself.

Kentucky State Police is handling the investigation. Troopers have received assistance from Carter County EMS, the Carter County Sheriff's Department, and the Carter County Coroner's Office.
