CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) – A truck driver faces possible charges after damage at Catlettsburg Cemetery to several tombstones and an iron gate, Catlettsburg Police say.
A truck driver faces possible charges after damage at Catlettsburg Cemetery to several tombstones and an iron gate in Boyd County, Kentucky.
The incident, which happened Tuesday evening, involved a driver with a company known as Maverick Trucking, police say.
Many people, including Kim Litteral, filed in and out of the cemetery Thursday to check and see if their loved ones' graves were damaged.
“I just don't understand what the thrill is to destroy property of someone who can't do anything about it,” Litteral said. “It's a coward that would do this. That's just my opinion.”
Keith Jarrell, one of the cemetery officials, has reached out to the company for comment, but have yet to receive a response.
“This is hallowed ground,” Jarrell said. “Our loved ones, our neighbors, our fathers and mothers and grandparents and cousins and nieces and nephews. All those people are buried in this cemetery. So it is a level of disrespect to have proceeded through here if it was anything other than completely unavoidable.”
It is unknown what caused the driver to go into the cemetery, toppling some tombstones and tearing down an iron gate.
No one was hurt, including the driver who was involved.
Police say evidence will be presented to the Commonwealth attorney to consider possible charges.
