ISLAND CREEK, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The names of two men shot and killed by a homeowner Monday morning have been released.

John Rowe, 41, of Pikeville, and Tommy Elswick, 38, of Robinson Creek, were pronounced dead at the scene of a home in the Sleepy Hollow community of Pike County.

The homeowner who shot them says the two men were breaking into his garage and stealing things when he shot and killed them.

The homeowner tells WSAZ his niece called, saying there was a strange car parked outside his home. When the homeowner went out to investigate, he found the two men carrying out his tools from his garage.

"I came around the garbage box, and this guy saw me so he took off on the left side of the vehicle and stopped at the left side to get something out, and I went around the right side to keep the vehicle between me and him," the homeowner said. "And he came around with a gun, so I shot him, and the other guy came around the garage with something and I shot him. One collapsed at the front, and one collapsed at the rear of the vehicle."

The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.
