Two dozen West Virginia schools damaged in severe flooding

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- More than two dozen schools in West Virginia were damaged by flooding.

Thursday, the West Virginia Department of Education released a list of schools and the severity of the flood damage.

“Our staff have worked closely this week with each of the impacted counties to determine the extent of damages at our schools. Our initial assessment revealed we have 25 schools with damages ranging from minor to severe. We will continue to work closely with county staff to determine a path forward as we repair and rebuild. I recognize the rebuilding process will be difficult in some cases and we are considering every variable to ensure we have safe buildings for our students to attend as we look ahead to the upcoming school year.”

The following schools were damaged:
Braxton County
Flatwoods Elementary School - moderate damage
2 inches of water throughout school
Playground a complete loss

Middle Burch Elementary - minor damage
Power outages causes loss of food in freezers, security system and camera issues

Davis Elementary - minor damage
Power outages causes loss of food in freezers, security system and camera issues

Bursville Elementary - minor damage
Power outages causes loss of food in freezers, security system and camera issues

Braxton Elementary - minor damage
Power outages causes loss of food in freezers, security system and camera issues

Clay County
H.E. White Elementary School - severe damage
Access bridge and playground area washed away
Waiting for professional assistance and access to the school
Secondary access point being assessed for use in the cleanup process

Clay High School - moderate damage
Basement level storage area flooded to ceiling
Sports equipment damaged

Bus Garage - severe damage
3 spare buses complete loss
Significant equipment loss
Unsure of one additional bus

Fayette County
Anstead Elementary - minor damage
Minor water in basement

Greenbrier County
Alderson Elementary - moderate damage
Flooded boiler room

Rupert Elementary - moderate damage
8 inches of water in lower classrooms

Greenbrier West High School - unknown
Officials cannot access due to roads

Rainelle Elementary - moderate damage
No specifics on damage released

Kanawha County
Elkview Middle School - moderate damage
2 inches of water in school
Gym floor ruined
No flood insurance

Clendenin Elementary - severe damage
4 feet of water in school
HVAC and electrical service under water

Herbert Hoover High School - severe damage
7 feet of water in school
Estimated damages to exceed $1 million
Everything on the first floor will need replaced, including two gym floors and auditorium
HVAC and electrical service under water

Bridge Elementary - severe damage
3 feet of water in school
No flood insurance

Monongalia County
Eastwood Elementary School - moderate damage
Some water in gym has been cleaned
Not sure of lasting damage

Morgan County
Warm Springs Intermediate School - moderate damage
Hail damage

Warm Springs Middle School - moderate damage
Hail damage

Berkeley Springs High School - moderate damage
Hail damage

Nicholas County
Richwood High School - severe damage
Boiler room, kitchen, gym, cafeteria flooded
Some water in the first floor highway
Most classrooms did not receive water
Boiler will need replaced

Richwood Middle School - severe damage
Entire school was flooded
Some sections had 4 feet of water, the rest of the school had water up to the baseboards
May be foundation damage

Summersville Middle School -severe damage
3 feet of water in entire school

Summers County
Summers County High School - moderate damage
Minor amount of water in the doors
football field completely submerged

Webster County
Glade Elementary - minor damage
Carpet needs replaced in classrooms
