UPDATE | Names released of two men killed in crash on U.S. 23

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 4/23/19 @ 2:20 p.m.
More details have been released about a deadly wrong-way crash that claimed two men's lives late Monday night on U.S. 23.

One of the drivers, 71-year-old Charles Howard of Raceland, was pulling off a side road onto U.S. 23, according to Raceland Police Chief Donald Sammons. Howard was attempting to get in the southbound lanes, but instead turned over into the northbound lanes and directly into path of the other car, Sammons said. Those two cars collided head-on.

The other driver, Rees A. Justice, 26, of Greenup, died at the scene.

Howard also died at the scene.

The crash was reported around 11:15 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Caroline Road. It closed U.S. 23 in that area for much of the overnight.

Two people are dead after a head-on crash late Monday night on U.S. 23 in Greenup County.

Raceland Police say Charles G. Howard, 71, of Raceland, and Rees A. Justice, 26, of Greenup, died at the scene.

The crash had a part of U.S. 23 shut down near Caroline Road for most of the night, but it has reopened.

Greenup County 911 says U.S. 23 in Wurtland is back open after a double fatality Monday night.

A firefighter told WSAZ a two-vehicle head-on crash happened around 11:15 p.m.

The names of the people in the wreck have not been released.

Crews are on the scene of a double fatality on U.S. 23 in Greenup County, according to 911 dispatch.

A firefighter says the two-vehicle head-on crash happened around 11:15 p.m.

Raceland and Wurtland Fire departments are on scene, as well as Flatwoods Police Department.

Police officers tell us the wreck happened in the NB lane.

A fireman says it happened near Caroline Road.

911 dispatch tells WSAZ all north and southbound lanes of Route 23 are closed. Traffic is being rerouted onto E. Berea Blvd.
