Vandals target white picket fences, costing hundreds in damages

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Several homeowners in the Westmoreland area of Huntington, woke up Saturday to discover their white picket fences destroyed.

"I don't understand it. It just ruins your day," Kevin Anderson said. "I don't understand why someone would want to do this."

A portion of his fence was destroyed at his home along Waverly Road.

On up the road, a neighbor had five panels destroyed and also found a hypodermic needle in her yard.

Anderson says it appears someone kicked down and ripped apart sections of the fence.

"You know these brackets are metal brackets on here and they are bent," Anderson said. "I mean they really hit this really hard."

Another homeowner says the fence was expensive to put up but the memories of building it for her late grandmother make the vandalism heartbreaking.

She now plans to put security cameras around her home.

"You know, it's sad that you have to put cameras up and spend a lot of your hard earned money because someone wants to destroy your property," Anderson said. "So I'm hoping someone knows something or maybe someone's got a conscious out there and realizes you know, this wasn't the best thing to do."
