A woman from Charleston was sentenced Wednesday to five to 35 years in prison for neglecting her mother and taking more than $69,000 of her money, the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office says.

Investigators say Amanda Reavis, 37, also abandoned her mother for between 10 days and two weeks while her she was immobile and unable to care for herself.

According to information from the prosecutor's office, Tammy Reavis, 59, later died. She was a hospital delivery room nurse until early onset dementia forced her retirement and disability.

Investigators say Amanda Reavis stole more than $69,000 of mother's "hard-earned retirement savings and Social Security and retirement income."

Judge Jennifer Bailey sentenced her to five to 35 years with credit for time served of 229 days.

A Charleston woman pleaded guilty to two felony offenses after police say she neglected and exploited her elderly mother.

According to court documents, Amanda Reavis accessed her mother’s bank accounts and retirement savings and spend the money on items for herself.

Altogether, investigators say she spent $71,000 of the victim’s money.

Records show that she would leave her mother for days at a time alone.

She was arrested in June of 2017 on charges of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult and financial exploitation of an elderly person.

According to the criminal complaint, Reavis’ mother was found to have bed sores, soiled clothing and being placed in a bedroom with little to no interaction.

Reavis now faces three to 15 years for the neglect offense and two to 20 years for the financial exploitation offense. She could also pay up to $15,000 in fines.

She is due back in court in September for her sentencing; she remains in jail.

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman is being charged after police say she neglected and exploited her elderly mother.

Amanda Reavis, 36, is charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult and financial exploitation of an elderly person.

According to a criminal complaint, Reavis' mother was admitted to the hospital in August 2016 with a low body mass index and cognitive abilities in decline.

Dunbar Police say Reavis has had power of attorney of her mother since January of 2015 to oversee her mother's health, well-being and her financial affairs.

Reavis took control of two of her mother's bank accounts, one of which had $58,000 in it. By March 2016, police say that account was down to just $85.

Police say from September 2015 to September 2016, Reavis was also receiving monthly social security deposits for her mother, each totaling $1,724.

According to the criminal complaint, Reavis left her mother in less than desirable conditions which included bed sores, soiled clothing and being placed in a bedroom with little to no interaction.

Reavis was turned into Adult Protection Services for neglect.
