IRVING, Texas – Men’s basketball senior guard C.J. Burks was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the first time this season and freshman guard Taevion Kinsey was named C-USA Freshman of the Week Monday (Jan. 21), as announced by the league office.

Both players were featured on the SportsCenter twitter account on a #SCTop10 play, along with sophomore forward Mikel Beyers, that ended with an alley-opp from Burks to Kinsey.

“C.J.’s is well deserved,” fifth-year head coach Dan D’Antoni said. “Back-to-back 30-point games and his shooting percentage was really high with a lot of steals.”

Burks put together an impressive week with a pair of 30-point games in Herd wins over FAU and FIU to go with 10 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocks during the week. His 30-point games were efficient as he shot 65.5 percent from the field, 50 percent form beyond the arc and a perfect 16-for-16 from the free-throw line.

In the first game against FAU, the senior shot 12-of-12 from the charity stripe and 8-for-14 from the field for his 30 points to go with six assists, five rebounds and three steals. He followed that up with an 11-of-15 shooting night, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and added five rebounds and four steals to his stat line in a win over FIU. The back-to-back 30-point games for Burks were the second and third such games of the season for the senior.

“Taevion had eight dunks in one game against FIU,” D’Antoni said. “That’ll tell you everything you need to know and he was a good defender on the ball.”

Since entering the starting lineup, Taevion Kinsey has stepped up his game by averaging 15.2 points 6.8 rebounds in his five starts. The freshman averaged 13 points and 7.5 rebounds in a pair of wins last week over FAU and FIU for the Herd, while accumulating a 59.1 shooting percentage.

In the first game of the week against FAU, despite only having six points, Kinsey was on the finishing end of an alley-oop that was featured on the SportsCenter twitter account to go with six rebounds. On Saturday against FIU, Kinsey went 10-of-15 from the field for 20 points and nine rebounds. Eight of his 10 made attempts were dunks, including three alley-opp plays. The 20-point effort was his second game of at least 20 points this season.

Men’s basketball is back in action on tonight (Jan. 21) to take on Western Kentucky at 9 p.m. EST on CBS Sports Network.
