Former Herd star passes away

HUNTINGTON, WV Marshall football officials have confirmed that former Herd running back Devon Johnson has passed away at 25 years old.

Johnson played at Marshall from 2012 to 2015 and was the school's 10th all time leading rusher. He gained 1767 yards in 2014 which is the second best total in school history. He was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist and signed with the NFL's Carolina Panthers as a free agent after he left Marshall.

Marshall coach Doc Holliday reacted to the news.

“I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing. Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively. Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”
