Simpson Dental Associates FAQ

Interesting Teeth Facts: People who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have 62% more tooth decay
We have talked a lot about this and there not only pop but also sport drinks have sugar and change the Ph of your mouth which can weaken the enamel. So sipping on them throughout the day is the problem. Having them with meals or drinking them in a shorter time frame and then rinsing your mouth out with water is better. The best thing to do is to drink more water!

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body
However, you should not use your teeth as tools! Don't tear string or open things with your teeth. Also, you should try not to chew on ice and be careful eating nuts and sticky things like caramel. The sticky candies can pull off crowns and stick to your teeth longer to cause cavities so you should stay away from things like milk duds, taffy, jelly beans, sugar daddies, etc.

If you don't floss, you miss cleaning 40% of your tooth surfaces.
One of our popular quotes is "You don't have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep." So flossing is an important part of your oral hygiene. Doing it at night before bed is the best time to do it and making sure to carry the floss all the way below the gums and wrap it to each side and brushing at least twice a day should help to prevent gum disease and cavities.

The average person only brushes for 45-70 seconds
You should be brushing for 2-3 minutes. For kids there are neat sand timers or an ap that plays songs that are two minutes like heros of hygiene or t-rex toothbrush timer. Keeping brushing and flossing fun for kids is important. For adults using a powered brush, they have timers and also help for reaching to the back teeth and will turn off if you push too hard. You should be brushing each quadrant of the mouth for 30 seconds.

More than 300 types of bacteria make up dental plaque
That's why brushing is important to remove this plaque and bacteria. Some of the bacteria in plaque is the same linked to overall health issues like heart disease stroke, diabetes, cancer, etc.
