GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Fire crews battled flames and heavy smoke at the American Electric Power's Gavin Plant in Cheshire Sunday afternoon.
Viewers called WSAZ reporting heavy smoke at the plant.
A WSAZ photojournalist reported there were also crews on the scene and flashing emergency lights.
According to Meigs County 911 dispatchers, firefighters from several departments were called to the plant at 12:37 p.m. because of the fire.
We're told it was contained in about 45 minutes and the scene is now clear.
Middleport Fire Department crews tell WSAZ the fire was caused by a transformer's catastrophic failure.
They also said the fire spread to a second transformer.
Fire crews said the two transformers are in close proximity to each other.
Middleport Fire officials said there were no workers near the fire and AEP continued operations with another unit.
They also said there was a fire earlier this year involving one of the same transformers.
According to investigators, no one was hurt in the fire.
Dispatchers said Middleport Fire, Pomeroy Fire and Rutland Fire all responded to the scene.
