UPDATE 8/31/15 @ 3:30 p.m.
WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A $5000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a fire that heavily damaged the former Fort Gay Middle School on Saturday.

Investigators with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office have determined the fire was set and the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, Fort Gay Fire Chief, Joseph Bowen, said the fire was suspicious, because there was no electricity running in the building.

Bowen also said the building had been vandalized a couple of times in the past.

The now closed school has stood in Fort Gay since 1931.

According to firefighters, the fire was reported about 6:30 Saturday evening.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the W.Va. Arson Hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE (3473).

UPDATE: 8/30/15
FORT GAY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A fire that damaged an abandoned school in Wayne County is under investigation by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office.

Fort Gay Fire Chief, Joseph Bowen, says the fire is suspicious, because there was no electricity running in the building.

"It's been vandalized a couple of times," Bowen said. "You kind of had it in the back of your mind that something like this might happen."

Firefighters say, while no one was hurt, plenty of damage was done to the empty building, which will be assessed to see if the next step is a restoration project or a demolition project. The school has stood in Fort Gay since 1931.

According to firefighters, the fire began at about 6:30 Saturday evening. Fort Gay firefighters say they received assistance from the Louisa Fire Department and Big Sandy River Fire Department to douse the flames.

Firefighters have not said whether or not they reported any potential suspects to the Fire Marshal's Office or police.

The lawn in front of the school is also the location of the community's annual Mountain Heritage Day.
