HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A family is welcoming the surprise new addition of a new baby.
The mother says right up til time for delivery, she had no idea she was pregnant.
After 2 a.m. Thursday, Mandie Smith of Culloden, West Virginia, says she woke up with some pretty significant pain.
She thought at first it was some other kind of medical issue, but then realized she was about to deliver a baby.
Smith says she had no idea whatsoever the past nine months that she was pregnant. She says she hasn't gained significant weight, and her normal clothes have fit. She also says she doesn't have normal menstrual cycles.
Harrison Smith was born 7:45 a.m. Thursday at Cabell Huntington Hospital perfectly healthy.
Doctors say these kinds of surprise births happen more often than you might think.
"Pregnancy usually has signs that are loud and clear," Dr. Allan Chamberlain with St. Mary's said, "but every year, more than 1,000 women in this country have babies before even knowing they were pregnant."
Smith says her friends and family have been wondering if this is some kind of a prank.
"Everybody has been like 'What?' " Smith said. "We've been texting people showing the baby, and they were like 'I was with you yesterday, you didn't look pregnant.' Nobody believes it. Everybody's in shock."
The father, J.R. Smith, was in Washington D.C. on a business trip when he got the phone call. He was able to witness the delivery on Facetime.
"I'm still kind of in shock," J.R. said. "It was just a split second and tears of joy."
The couple already has three older boys. They say they were able to detect those pregnancies early on.
Smith says her other sons are thrilled about the surprise new addition as well.
