Family opens egg and produce stand for community
ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -With the cost of eggs hitting home for many, some people are deciding to take matters into their own hands.
Bobbie Smith and her husband Alex opened up a stand for people to stop by and pick up eggs and produce--at a cost that won’t break the bank.
“I actually cannot keep up with my egg customers at the moment,” Smith said. “It kills my soul to have to turn people down and let them know that we don’t have the eggs because we’re picking up in traffic, and people are just refusing to pay the prices of the store-bought eggs.”
The business is called Abba Acre.
The farm stand sits outside their home on Meade Springer Road in Ashland.
Bobbie said that business is booming.
“We’ve had a lot of community that has reached out and they come by and pick up some eggs and produce periodically,” she said. “It’s starting to spread, and the news is spreading about our farm stand. We’re really excited about having a lot of produce this summer to be able to support our community with.”
Tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, and fresh corn are just a few of the options customers have to choose from later in the year.
In April, Bobbie--through the Boyd County Extension Office-- will be offering classes for beginner chicken-keeping, incubating and hatching eggs, so others can learn how to raise their own chickens and have fresh eggs as well.
Bobbie said it’s a great feeling being able to help her community and provide an affordable source for produce and eggs.
You can find Abba Acre on Facebook, where they post updates about what food they’re offering.
