World’s Largest Acorn dispute
OAK HILL, Ohio (WSAZ) - A rivalry is brewing between Oak Hill, Ohio, and a community near Washington D.C.
Back in June, Oak Hill unveiled what they’re calling “The World’s Largest Acorn” sculpture in Central Memorial Park.
It’s more than 2,800 pounds and a little more than 15 feet tall.
Kurtis Strickland, the president of the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, said his family has enjoyed visiting various world’s largest various things across the country.
“One of my young boys asked why we can’t have the world’s largest something in Oak Hill?” Strickland said. “It’s just a way to get more people here.”
However, the Silver Spring Maryland Historical Society caught wind of this. They have a 175-year old acorn gazebo in a park.
After measuring it last month, members of the society are claiming theirs is still the biggest.
“These days of misinformation, we just can’t let this stand,” Chip Py, a member of the historical society, said.
“It evoked a reaction because the acorn is so important to what Silver Spring is about,” Jim Lieberman, another member of the historical society, told WSAZ.
Strickland maintains Oak Hill’s is indeed biggest.
“Ours is definitely taller when you count the actual acorn, minus the stilts and everything theirs sits on,” Strickland said.
When asked what his message would be to the folks in Oak Hill still claiming their acorn is bigger, Lieberman said, “That’s a nice thing to say, but factually, it’s not accurate.”
“It’s fun to kind of go back and forth with them,” Strickland said.
Strickland said they have a bar code by their acorn where visitors can check in and say where they’re visiting from. He says they’ve already had visitors from nearly every state.
