RIPLEY, W.Va . (WSAZ) - The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says they arrested the athletic director and trainer for Ripley High School Friday, November 6, after an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct with a minor.

Deputies say Steven Lough faces three felony charges in connection to sexual misconduct and child exploitation.

Investigators say that, in October, Lough started an inappropriate relationship with the victim that developed into sharing sexually explicit messages and photos over text. They say this was corroborated by examining Lough and the victim’s phones.

During an interview, deputies say Lough admitted to them that he had sexual contact with the victim on multiple occasions.

Jackson County Schools say in a statement: " Jackson County Schools is aware of the charges filed against health teacher, athletic director, and athletic trainer Steven Lough. Effective November 6, 2026, Steven Lough is no longer employed by Jackson County Schools."

It goes on to say: “Jackson County Schools will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all appropriate agencies throughout this investigation. We remain committed to protecting our students and supporting our school community.”
