ELEANOR, W.Va. (WXII) -- A couple from Putnam County died in a fiery crash in North Carolina Thursday.

Rick Stover, 62, and his wife, Ramona Stover, 63, of Eleanor, West Virginia, were killed according to WXII.

The accident happened on I-77 Thursday afternoon in Yadkin County. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating.

According to WXII, the crash involved three tractor-trailers and the pickup truck. The Stovers were in the pickup truck.

Investigators say traffic was stalled on the highway because of construction. A tractor-trailer did not slow down, according to troopers, and slammed into the couple's truck.

It started a chain reaction and the pickup truck smashed into another tractor-trailer in front of it. Troopers say a third tractor-trailer was struck during the crash as well.

A married couple driving south down I-77 came upon the crash scene and helped some of the victims. One even grabbed a fire extinguisher from one of the trucks, but could not put the fire out.

Two of the tractor-trailer drivers were taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. It's unclear how serious those injuries are.

For now, troopers say no charges have been filed. That is expected to change, WXII reports.
