Greenbrier Resort employees’ health insurance may be at risk
Attorneys say resort owes $2.4 million in past due premiums
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVVA) - Employees of The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs may lose their health insurance if $2.4 million in past due premiums are not paid by the resort by Aug. 27.
A letter was sent to employees on Friday by the New York-based law firm Shulte Roth + Zabel saying the Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, which is owned by Gov. Jim Justice and his family’s companies, is four months delinquent to the Amalgamated National Health Fund, owing about $2.4 million in delinquent contributions with an additional $1.2 million in contributions soon due.
These contributions, the letter said, include premiums that were deducted from employees’ pay but not remitted to the Health Fund. If the payment is not made by Aug. 27, the letter said the Health Fund will suspend coverage to all of the Greenbrier’s covered employees. The resort has about 600 total employees.
The Health Fund represents various union organizations across the nation.
The Greenbrier has been contacted by WVVA for a response to the letter.
August 27 is also the date the Greenbrier was scheduled to be publicly auctioned off to pay almost $10 million in debt owed by the Justice Companies to Beltway Capital, which recently acquired the debt from JPMorgan Chase and ran a legal ad in a Lewisburg newspaper to announce the auction.
The Justice Companies’ attorney has filed a request for an injunction to stop the auction in Greenbrier County Circuit Court.
